University of Western Australia Scholarships 2013

University of Western Australia IPRS and SIRF Scholarships for Foreign Students

Scholarship Description
Applications are invited from international students for scholarships to undertake a master's by research or Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Western Australia (UWA). There are two major scholarships schemes: International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS); and UWA Scholarships for International Research Fees (SIRF).

These schemes seek to attract top quality international postgraduate students to areas in which the University has specialised research strengths and to support Australia's research effort.

The International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) are funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) and the Scholarships for International Research Fees (SIRF) are funded by The University of Western Australia.

Eligibility
IPRS and SIRF Scholarships will only be available to those applicants who:

  •     Have completed a four year undergraduate degree at first-class honours level or equivalent. An applicant may be disadvantaged if the Scholarships Committee cannot make a comparison with The University of Western Australia’s standards, particularly in relation to the class of Honours achieved, i.e. first or second class Honours;
  •     Intend to enroll as a full-time candidate for a Master’s degree by research or a PhD degree;
  •     Will be commencing their course in the semester following the scholarship round in which they have successfully applied;
  •     Provide evidence of achieving English language proficiency to the following standards:
  •         IELTS SCORE OF 6.5, with speaking and listening no less than 6.0 and with reading and writing no less than 6.5;
  •         Paper-based TOEFL score of 580 or above (Computer-based TOEFL test is not acceptable) with a Test of Spoken English score of 45 and a TWE (Test of Written English) of 4.5;
  •         iBT TOEFL internet-based test score of 95 with 22 for reading and listening, 24 for speaking and 23 for writing;
  •         Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English: C grade;
  •         Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English: B grade;
  •         UWA CELT Bridging Program – ‘B+’ grade or above

Please NOTE that all English test results must normally have been obtained within the last two years.

The following applicants will be ineligible for a scholarship under the SIRF scheme:
  •     International applicants who have already obtained a PhD degree or equivalent.
  •     International applicants who have already obtained a Master’s degree by research and are applying to undertake another Master’s degree by research.
  •     International applicants are not eligible for an IPRS awards if they have already commenced the degree for which they are seeking an award, unless they can establish that they were unable to apply for an award in the previous calendar year. Students who have already enrolled are eligible for the SIRF awards.
  •     International applicants who have not provided evidence of their English language proficiency meeting or exceeding the standards listed above and in the application form.
  •     Australian and New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.

Scholarship benefits

Tuition Fee Scholarship, Fortnightly Stipend and Health Insurance worth $27228 per annum is covered by the IPRS Scholarships. A SIRF scholarship covers the cost of international tuition fees, and required health insurance premiums for the awardee only.

Successful applicants can expect to become members of a research team, working under the direction of senior researchers and in an area which has attracted external resources.

All travel and relocation costs are the responsibility of the applicant.

Method of Application
When you apply for an IPRS, you are automatically considered for the award of a SIRF scholarship. You do not apply for a Masters by Research or Phd study place or candidature separately as this is included in your scholarship application. If you applied for, or did so previously, a full-fee place to the UWA International Centre, you must advise the Graduate Research and Scholarships Office.

Scholarship Description
The Greek State Scholarships Foundation (Ι.Κ.Υ.) announces its offer of scholarships to foreign nationals from selected countries who wish to pursue further education / postgraduate studies / postdoctoral research in Greece beginning in the academic year 2013-2014.

Previously, scholarships were granted by the Hellenic Ministry of National Education and Religious Affairs to foreign nationals who wished to attend undergraduate or postgraduate studies or conduct a research study in Greek Universities and / or Centers of Scientific Research, as well as a summer seminar of Greek Language and Civilization.

Eligibility
Applicants should:

  1.     Be foreign nationals.
  2.     Hold only foreign citizenship (not both foreign and Greek).
  3.     Not exceed the age limit by the application deadline as follows:
  •         a., d. and e. categories of scholarships: are aged 35 years (year of birth after 1978 and onwards)
  •         b. category of scholarships: are aged 40 years (year of birth after 1973 and onwards)
  •         category for medical doctors: are aged 40 years (year of birth after 1973 and onwards)
  •         c. category of scholarships: are aged 55 years (year of birth after 1958 and onwards)
    4.      Hold a graduate degree from a foreign recognised higher education institute.
   5.      Hold a postgraduate degree (Master’s or equivalent) from a foreign or a Greek University for prospective PhD applicants. This postgraduate degree is not a prerequisite for the following categories:
        - specialisation in the Fine Arts (d. category)
        - collection of research data (e. category)
        - those who are legally residents in Greece whilst undertaking PhD studies.
    - Applicants for postdoctoral research studies must hold a doctoral degree (PhD) completed at a foreign or a Greek University. However, their graduate degree (Bachelor) should be from a foreign University.

    - For further education (in the following specific subject areas of study: Greek Language, Literature, Philosophy, History and Art), applicants should be professors in a Department of Greek studies at a foreign University. A certified document from this Department showing their employment must also be submitted along with all relevant documentation.

    - Medical doctors should have either completed their specialty or hold a postgraduate degree (equivalent to Master’s). The scholarship is strictly offered for postgraduate/doctoral studies and not for work or internship in a state hospital.
 6.        Have a very good command of English or French.
 7.        Have never been on a scholarship from the I.K.Y. (those who have been granted a scholarship for the IKY Programme “Greek Language and Culture” are entitled to apply).
    Have not undertaken studies in Greece on a scholarship provided by any Greek authority.

Eligible groups
The scholarships are awarded to citizens of the following countries:

    Nationals (foreigners or of Greek origin) of Balkan and Eastern European countries (non-member states of the European Union), Asia, Africa and Latin America - Fifteen (15) scholarships and;
    Nationals (foreigners or of Greek origin) of the European Union Member States, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, U.S.A., Canada, Japan and Oceania, for studies - Fifteen (15) scholarships.

    Postgraduate studies in combination with Modern Greek Language courses in a school of Modern Greek Language, at a state Greek University only during the first year of the scholarship.

        ii) Doctorate (PhD) (one (1) year up to three (3) years).
    Postdoctoral research (six (6) months up to one (1) year) in combination with optional Modern Greek Language courses in a School of Modern Greek Language, at a state Greek University.
    Further education in the following subject areas: Greek Language, Literature, Philosophy, History and Art aimed for professors of Greek studies at Universities abroad (six (6) months up to one (1) year).
    Specialisation in Fine Arts (attendance of seminars) – one (1) year in combination with optional Modern Greek Language courses in a School of Modern Greek Language, at a state Greek University.
    Collection of research data for applicants who are conducting PhD studies in their country, (one (1) year).

Scholarship benefits
All scholarships include:

    600,00€ (net amount – taxes are excluded which are paid by this Foundation) as a fixed contribution for initial expenses.
    Free cost emergency medical treatment under the National Health Service (in public hospitals). European citizens should have the European Insurance – Illness Card from their insurance agency of their country.

    The scholarships for postgraduate, doctoral studies, specialisation in the Fine Arts and collection of research data include a monthly allowance of 600,00€ (net amount – taxes are excluded which are paid by this Foundation) for living expenses, whereas for postdoctoral and further education studies (in the Greek Language, Literature, Philosophy and Art), a monthly allowance of 800,00€ (net amount – taxes are excluded which are paid by this Foundation).
    The full cost of tuition fees (net amount – taxes are excluded which are paid by this Foundation) to attend courses in a state School of Modern Greek Language at a Greek University, provided only during the first year of the scholarship (where applicable).

    The scholarships for doctoral studies include as well: a) up to 300,00€ (net amount – taxes are excluded which are paid by this Foundation) to cover binding and printing costs of the PhD thesis at the end of the scholarship and b) up to 300,00€ (net amount – taxes are excluded which are paid by this Foundation) to cover research costs (e.g. consumables) if such expenses are required by the programme of studies.

    - Grants are not available to fund travel expenses and attendance at conferences, seminars, symposia or research activities.

    - No additional assistance or funds are provided for the spouse or other dependants of the scholarship holder (if you plan to bring your family with you, you will need to consider cost issues carefully).

    - The scholarship will be withheld for periods spent outside Greece without the prior permission of this Foundation.

Method of Application
Applicants who meet the above-stated requirements by the application deadline should submit the Application Form and requirements through the Greek Diplomatic Authorities in their country of residence (or in a neighbouring country in case of absence of a Greek Embassy or Consulate in their country).

Alabaster Scholarships at University of Canterbury

Alabaster Scholarships for International Undergraduate students

Scholarship Description
Austin Henry Alabaster, Esq, who died in 1920, bequested to the University of Canterbury an endowment for scholarships in classical literature in memory of his father, the Reverend Charles Alabaster.

Two Charles and Austin Henry Alabaster Scholarships, tenable for one year, shall be offered for competition every year to students in undergraduate Greek and Latin courses. The scholarships are offered annually to matriculated students of the University of Canterbury.

Eligibility
The scholarships shall be open to any matriculated and undergraduate student of the university; under special conditions, however, at the discretion of the Academic Board, a scholarship may be awarded to a graduate.

The scholarships shall not be held concurrently with a University Senior Scholarship.

Candidates for the scholarships shall be assessed for linguistic ability in their end-of-year examinations and shall submit an essay within three weeks after the examinations. Candidates may offer either Latin or Greek or both; but a general knowledge of both Greek and Roman history and literature will be required.

The holder of a scholarship shall pursue a course of study which meets with the approval of the Academic Board.

Selection criteria:

Election to the scholarships shall be made by the University Council after considering the recommendation of the Academic Board.

Number of awards

Sponsorship duration
Award tenure is for one (1) year. The tenure of a scholarship may be terminated at any time by the Council, if it receives from the Academic Board an unfavorable report on the conduct or progress of a scholar.

Scholarship benefits
The current value of the scholarships is $2,250 per annum.

Method of Application

The Alabaster scholarships require that you have been offered ‘admission’ into the university of Canterbury. You would need to fill in a scholarship Application Form (see official website via link below for this). However, note that application forms are only available from approximately 8 weeks ahead of the closing date.
